MGA LIKHA NI BATHALA

Mixed Media Drawing on Paper (Coloured Pencils, Markers & Acrylic Paint) | ~22” x 30” | 2023

Mga Likha Ni Bathala (God’s Creations in Tagalog) is a series of sacred, powerful and fierce drawings revolves around four gods or deities in precolonial Philippine folklore, containing traditional and fantasy elements incorporated with found images on social media and bodily postures inspired by contemporary editorial fashion elements. Each piece contains a cutout drawing of the figure with another cutout drawing behind it that marks their identity and character. Through mythology, I aim to empower prejudiced communities, different identities, and sexualities, given the open interpretation and limited information of Filipino mythology due to colonization, as well as discussing my cultural self-determination being a diasporic Filipino in Canada.
